I had been extremely anxious to photograph Ian and Ratha's wedding. Long ago last summer, we met in a coffee house in North Park. They are so open and friendly that right off the bat I felt as if we were old friends catching up in the hottest-no AC-coffee house in San Diego. Ian brought up the idea of getting shots of him and the groomsmen surfing on the morning of the wedding. Little did I know at the time that Ian was the only one of the guys in the group that actually surfed! But here we were on the morning of their wedding and all of his groomsmen were packing into wet suits and venturing into the frigid ocean water. I thought that was an awesome symbol of how close of friends these guys were.
This was the first time I photographed at Scripps Seaside Forum in La Jolla, CA. It is a beautiful location right on the ocean. The views were amazing and the building itself is super unique and a lot of fun to use as a backdrop for photographs. The access to the beach was epic, especially considering it was maybe 100 feet from this awesome pier.
Being a photographer is often like being an orphan. You get to jump in on peoples lives at these amazing milestones and then it's over as soon as it began. It was a pleasure getting to know Ian and Ratha over the course of the last year. While I see couples getting married many times over in a year, what Ian and Ratha have is special. I have never seen two people laugh so hard together. There was a special moment during the toasts when Ratha's father spoke of missing his wife and wishing should could have been there. The look in Ian's eyes while comforting Ratha said all that needed to be said about their connection. Every aspect of photographing their wedding was fun, but that quick moment and that one image is the one that is my favorite.
Ryan, you truly captured the feelings, the energy, and the personalities of us, our family, and our friends. I was unprepared for the impact my wedding day would have on me and these pictures will help take us, our family, and our friends back there.
